Why Sine Charta?

Part One

As this is the first blog entry for Trinity's new online magazine, it seemed to me appropriate that I should discuss why the magazine exists in print and online, how this all came about, and what the Trinity community can look forward to in the future.

I had been thinking for some time about how the magazine might best make use of the Web, which is my way of saying that I didn't want to post a massive PDF file of Per Saecula to the School's Web site, claim that I had moved the magazine online, and wash my hands of the whole affair. I am a big believer in the "right medium for the right message" and wanted to make certain that whatever was put online gained some advantage from appearing as electrons and not in ink. Some sections of the print magazine were, and have been, ripe to move to the Web. "Tiger Sports Report" with its team records and images of varsity athletics and "Campus News" and its multiple time-sensitive sections, both called out for a more immediate medium. Then there were the feature articles and interviews. These sections of the magazine had to stay in print, because few of us are willing to spend more than a minute or two on any given page on the Web, but for years I had longed for a way to make available the source materials that I gathered while researching both.
