Edith de Montebello, Former Admissions Officer and Director of Financial Aid, has Died

Edith de Montebello, Admissions Officer and Director of Financial Aid at Trinity from 1982 to 2023, passed away on 16 September 2025.

Born Edith Myles in New York City in 1939, she attended The Brearley School and Miss Porter’s School. She graduated from Harvard University in 1961 with a degree in economics. She married Philippe de Montebello, whom she met in Howard Mumford Jones’s nineteenth-century English poetry course at Harvard, in June of 1961. Shortly after their marriage, Philippe became a curatorial assistant at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and from 1977 to 2008 he was its director.

Edith spent much of her own career in support of Trinity, where for decades she served as the Director of Financial Aid. She is remembered by her family, friends, and the Trinity community for her kindness, attention, brilliant intellect, and devotion to her family.

Edith was predeceased by her daughter, Laure. She is survived by her husband of sixty-four years, Philippe de Montebello; her sons Marc and Charles; her son-in-law Dr. Robert Bernstein, husband of Laure; her grandchildren Alexandre Achille, Claire, Max, Kivlighan, and Everest; and her great-grandson Jacques.

Trinity’s 30th Head of School Alexis Mulvihill and Trinity’s 24th Head of School Robin Lester.

Robin Lester visited campus on Wednesday, 18 June to see the many changes since he was head of school from 1975-1986. He and his wife, Helen, joined Alexis and Associate Head of School for Advancement and Operations Myles Amend for lunch before their tour.

Trinity Orchestra wins Gold at WorldStrides Heritage National Music Festival in Philadelphia!

Congratulations to the members of the Upper School Orchestra and Philharmonia who participated in the WorldStrides Heritage National Music Festival in Philadelphia this weekend! Our orchestral students delivered a fantastic performance full of sophisticated musicality and nuance, and took home the gold!

Trinity Orchestra received a Gold Award for their exceptional playing. Additionally, they won the Best Orchestral Performance Award and have been invited to participate in the Festival of Gold next year!

Trinity’s music ensembles and student musicians receive multiple awards at WorldStrides Music Festival in Washington, D.C.!

Members of Trinity’s Jazz Bands and Madrigals had an incredible experience competing at the WorldStrides Music Festival in Washington, D.C. this past weekend. Our students performed beautifully and brought home an impressive collection of awards. A big congratulations to our student musicians!

Ensemble Awards
• Trinity Madrigals Concert Choir – Gold, 1st Place
• Jazz Messengers – Gold, 1st Place
• Jazz Crusaders – Gold, 2nd Place
• Tiger Jazz – Gold, 3rd Place

Special Awards
• The Jazz Messengers received the Adjudicator's Award and the Outstanding Band Award
• The Trinity Madrigals Concert Choir earned the Choral Invitation Award
• Trinity School was honored with the Sweepstakes Award for achieving the highest combined scores of the entire festival!

We are also thrilled to announce that three of our student musicians, Matthew Sierra ’25, Arlo Virtucio ’25, and Prince Peal ’26, received the prestigious Maestro Award for their exceptional musicianship.


Former Faculty Member Lillian M. Salazar has died

Former Faculty Member Lillian M. Salazar has died

Lillian M. Salazar, Teacher of Fourth Grade in the Lower School from 1990 to 1996, passed away on 4 February 2025 in Bloomingdale, New Jersey.

A New Yorker for most of her life, Lillian was born in the Bronx in 1935. She was the first member of her family to attend college, and she had a lifelong commitment to education. In addition to her time at Trinity, she also taught elementary students at PS 6 in the Astor Program. She was passionate about inspiring a love of nature in her students, and she embraced innovative and experimental teaching methods.

Lillian was a dedicated environmentalist and nature enthusiast, and she loved spending time outdoors with her husband, Michael Southwell, and their two sons. They spent summers and weekends on Glen Wild Lake in New Jersey, eventually moving to their summer cottage full-time when Lillian retired from Trinity. She is remembered by her many students, her family, and her extended community for her joy and curiosity, her warm spirit, and her ability to make everyone she encountered feel special.

Lillian is predeceased by her husband, Michael. She is survived by her sons, Adam Salazar and Alex Southwell; her daughters-in-law, Harli and Sandy; and her five grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, 15 February in Butler, New Jersey.
