Upper School students at Trinity may select from a wide-range of courses in the Visual Arts, including a course in printmaking. This course, which is available to all students who have completed either the Drawing and/or Painting courses, may include instruction in etching, intaglio and/or relief printing processes. Beyond the familiar linoleum cutting, relief processes may include Japanese wood block cutting, reduction printing techniques and the creation and printing of callographs. Students are encouraged to take an experimental approach on their way to defining their own unique voice.
Visual Arts faculty member Harrison Williams offers study in etching and printmaking and, in this video, demonstrates some of the techniques his students learned during 2009-2010.
Native American Festival
In Grade Two, Trinity students study Native Americans of the Northeast Woodlands. Throughout the year the students work on the Native American Festival, an interdisciplinary festival that integrates arts and crafts, literature, singing, acting, dancing, and the playing of musical instruments. For six weeks in the winter and spring of 2010, some of the work the students and teachers did in classes and rehearsals was documented on digital video. After the festival performance, the students were asked individually and in groups to describe their experiences throughout the process.
Nearly nine hours of video footage has been edited into the nine minute documentary you can see here. A unique opportunity to observe the experiences of the teachers and of the students, this documentary provides a window into the world of Trinity's Lower School.
Middle School Orchestra
Trinity's Middle School Orchestra is a staple at performances throughout the year. Appearing at Middle School assemblies and in evening concerts like the Spring String Fling, the talent of the Middle School Orchestra may be seen in any number of venues. For sixteen weeks in the autumn and winter of 2010-2011, some of the work the students did in rehearsals with teacher and conductor Mr. Steven Rochen—in preparation for a concert in January 2011—was documented on digital video. After the concert, several students described their experiences with the Middle School Orchestra.

Upper School Theatre IV
In the second semester of their senior year, Theatre IV students at Trinity may choose to direct a one-act play. In the 2010-2011 academic year Diedre J. Banton ’11, Maxwell DeLott ’11, Gordon Penn Reed ’11, and Peter Elman Ronson ’11 decided to take on this challenge. Diedre and Gordon opted to direct plays that they had written, while Max and Peter decided to direct works written by others. Drama and English Teacher Michael Gilbert teaches the Theatre IV course, although the students are entirely responsible for casting the plays, rehearsing them, and getting them ready for two nights of performances.
This short documentary follows the students from the first day of class to the final night of performance. It provides a unique opportunity to watch the students as they meet and overcome numerous challenges as directors and as actors. The documentary runs a total of seventeen minutes and is divided into two parts.
This program contains strong language and adult themes. Viewer discretion is advised.
Middle School Printmaking
Middle School students have the opportunity to explore many different visual art disciplines, including printmaking in Grades Five and Six with Visual Arts Teacher Marisol Martinez. The students begin by creating a drawing of a variety of objects, which they then transfer to a foam plate—the surface that they will use to create their prints. During the six weeks of the course the students learn to create patterns, mix colors, print multiple colors on the same print, and they discover other techniques that allow them to realize their creative visions.
This documentary follows the students from the first day of class to the last, showing the progression of the students' skills as well as of their creative work.
Grade One Circus Train
In Grade One the students spend part of their arts education creating sculptures made of wood and other materials to be part of a circus train, reminiscent of the trains that would pull into towns across America with separate cars for each part of the circus. The students begin the project by using their imaginations…thinking of scenes that they believe to be or wish were part of the circus. They move on to drawing what they have imagined and then begin work to turn that two dimensional representation back into a three dimensional object. Along the way the students gain skills, including the use of tools, as well as confidence in their abilities.
For six weeks in the winter of 2011, the steady progression of the students' work on the circus train was documented on digital video. After the project was completed, the students were asked to describe their experiences throughout the project and Mr. Edelstein was asked to describe the project and its goals.
Nearly eight hours of footage has been edited into the six minute documentary you can see here. It is a wonderful opportunity to be able to watch the students as they learn and grow more confident in their work and their choices.
Grade Four Trinity Tones
Kindergarten Visual Arts Rotation
Students in Trinity's Kindergarten have an opportunity to learn about artists and to experiment with creating their own works of art throughout the year. Breaking into small groups, the students gather for forty-five minutes each week for about ten weeks (a trimester) and explore ceramics, sculpture, drawing, painting, collage, and more. Almost every class begins with a book, either about an artist (Vincent Van Gough or perhaps Alexander Calder) or a particular concept (color mixing)...followed by a lesson related to that book.
This arts documentary follows students in Ms. de Winter's Kindergarten class as they are taught by assistant teacher Amber Hagen who helps them learn about art and supports them in their creative aspirations.

Visiting Artist Ed Palermo
A new program this year is Trinity's visiting artist program in the Performing Arts Department. The program is designed to capitalize on the diversity and talent of the performing artists who live in, work in, and visit New York City. Throughout the academic year the department will bring in artists to perform for the students and then teach in their classes, expanding their educational experiences. The Ed Palermo Big Band, headed by Ed Palermo...the arranger, alto saxophone and guitar playing band leader. The band is known for distinctive big band interpretations of the great twentieth century composer, Frank Zappa. Featured on NPR's Weekend Edition in 2006 and performing throughout New York City and the region, the band interprets Zappa's beautiful but notoriously difficult material with apparent ease. The band is comprised of professional musicians from in and around New York City, including Katie Jacoby (electric violin) and Bruce McDaniel (guitar) who are featured in this video. This video provides a unique opportunity to see segments from the band's concert during Upper School Community Time and to watch Katie Jacoby and Bruce McDaniel work with Middle School and Upper School students.
Upper School Honors Chorus
Trinity's Upper School Honors Chorus is an extra-curricular activity that meets at 7:30a.m. every Wednesday morning. The students, all members of Trinity's chorus that meets during the school day, have the opportunity to pursue their passion for singing in a group that competes in the Berklee College of Music High School Jazz Festival in Boston. The competition includes schools from throughout the United States, including performing arts public and independent schools.
This arts documentary follows the students as they develop their repertoire in preparation for the competition in Boston.
Middle School Jazz Band
Trinity's Middle School Jazz Band is one of the Performing Arts Department offerings in the Middle School, providing students with the opportunity to practice and perform jazz, blues, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll. The students, who enter the course with a wide variety of instrumental experience, learn not only to read music but they also learn music theory, composition, and they develop improvisation skills. The goal of the course is to help the students achieve the technical skills and critical theoretical understanding they need to effectively express themselves through their instruments and their voices. The students perform at a variety of events throughout the school year.

Grade Four Band
This arts documentary follows the progression of the first year of the Grade Four band, which adds the study of saxophone and trumpet to the Lower School curriculum. Teachers Jay Brandford and Paul Brandenburg work to get the students ready for their first concert in February 2014.
