Gretel grew up in metropolitan Detroit and moved to Rochester, New York, to pursue a BA at the University of Rochester, where she double-majored in mathematics and Spanish. After returning to Detroit to work briefly in controls engineering, Gretel moved to New York to join the New York City Teaching Fellows Program. She earned an MA in secondary education at Brooklyn College while starting her teaching career at George W. Wingate High School in Crown Heights. After nine years of classroom teaching, Gretel supported beginning STEM teachers at Math for America. She founded the CUNY Tutor Corps program, a partnership between CUNY’s Office of Academic Affairs, the Office of the Mayor, and the New York City Department of Education. Gretel spends her free time cooking and making quilts as well as watching Star Wars with her husband and daughter. She is excited to return to the math classroom this fall.
